Medical Device Design Consultant

With over 20 years of experience in mechanical design engineering, John Bergman III has dedicated his career to advancing medical device prototype development, product optimization, and design for manufacturability (DFM). As the founder of Bergman Prototyping, he provides expert consulting services to support new product development across the medical, life sciences, consumer electronics, automotive, and defense industries.

John Bergman III

John holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from San Jose State University, specializing in Mechanical Design & Mechatronics, and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) from Santa Clara University, with a focus on Mechanical Design and Bioengineering.

Throughout his career, John has worked with both large corporations and startups, gaining hands-on experience across the full product design cycle. His expertise spans mechanical design, prototype development, regulatory compliance, and manufacturing optimization, ensuring that products are not only innovative but also scalable and production-ready.

 

Industry Experience & Career Highlights

John’s diverse background includes working with contract design and manufacturing companies, where he gained extensive experience in medical device development, diagnostics, and defense engineering. His work has focused on designing, optimizing, and refining components and assemblies for highly regulated industries, ensuring compliance with global medical and quality standards.

Key Roles & Contributions

  • Tecan Systems – Supported the design and redesign of components for medical instruments and OEM pumps, valves, pipettors, and XYZ robots.

  • Varian Medical Systems – Led mechanical redesign efforts for radiotherapy medical devices, improving performance and manufacturability.

  • Stellartech Research Corporation – Designed capital equipment and disposable medical devices, ensuring compliance with biocompatibility, manufacturability, and sustainability standards.

  • Avago Technologies (now Broadcom) – Developed a dual-laser sensor package for optical navigation systems, designing and machining prototyping fixtures and testing performance with LabVIEW, MATLAB, and Linux.

  • BAE Systems – Worked in the propulsion group to support drivetrain systems for hybrid military vehicles, specializing in series hybrid systems, vehicle dynamics, and electric motor design.

 

John is proficient in Pro/ENGINEER (ProE), SolidWorks, AutoDesk, and AutoCAD, with expertise in Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T), finite element analysis (FEA), and alternative energy systems.

Teaching & Mentorship in Engineering

John is passionate about educating the next generation of engineers and has served as an adjunct professor at San Jose State University, teaching courses in Design and Manufacturability Engineering (ME 110, ME 136, ME 154). His role extends beyond the classroom, providing mentorship, career coaching, and senior project reviews to mechanical engineering students.

In addition to teaching, John actively supports SJSU’s Formula SAE team, providing CNC-machined components and engineering guidance. His commitment to hands-on learning and industry collaboration has helped students bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world engineering applications.
